Likert Scale
Likert scale has different variations, and the aim is to measure the attitude of people. It is the most prevalent attitude scale to measure the opinion or perception of the public. A Likert scale is a psychometric scale usually associated with research used to represent people’s opinions and attitudes to a topic or subject matter. Likert scale is typically used in questionnaires which are designed to measure people’s attitudes, opinions, or perceptions. In surveys, Liker Scale is considered as a vital tool and is very widely used in questionnaires.
For measuring the opinion or attitude towards a given subject, Likert scale is an integral part of any research. Usually, Likert scale follows a five, seven, or nine-point agreement scale used to measure respondents’ agreement with a subject statement, with five and seven points used most frequently. One of the main assumptions of Likert scale is that the strength/intensity of an attitude is linear. Likert scale is designed to measure attitudes that are multi-item.
Likert scale is a unidimensional scale used to collect respondent attitudes and opinions. Likert scales are used to understand the respondent’s agreement or rating level of a particular subject under study rather than the preference of the subject from a group of item, which is ranking scale.
Rensis Likert, (1903 – 1981), American social scientist who developed this scale, and it is named after his name.
